Fairfield Glade United
Methodist Church
Housing Authority Care Closet
There is a great need!  There are nine residential sections in
Cumberland County for low-income families.  The residents are
carefully screened to qualify for housing.  The Closet provides
supplies not covered by food stamps, i.e., cleaning supplies and
personal hygiene items.  The campaign we conducted for such
items in June was very successful.  Due to the economic times,
the need for aid has grown so Servant Ministry is asking the
congregation to donate again to this cause.  The committee from
the Housing Authority is able to shop and purchase the supplies
at a cost savings and buy the necessary items in bulk.  This has
been a successful program in the past, and we hope to make it
better this year.  You may make your check payable to FFGUMC
with Care Closet in the memo section.  The checks may be placed
in the offering plates or dropped off at the church office.  For
questions, call Terry or Liz Clark, 707-7507.
Announcements

Tapes go to CDs!
Our tape ministry has upgraded to the 21st century and we are now able to offer CDs to anyone wishing to have copies of our Sunday worship services. We
have a crew of folks who will hand deliver CDs to your home if you miss church due to hospitalization or illness. Whether you are at home for only a short time
of recovery or if you are no longer able to attend worship, we would love to offer this service to you. If you are out of town for a short time and would like us to
hold copies for you, we are able to do that as well. Or if you go away for an extended time and would like to receive CDs at your temporary location, we would
be glad to forward them to you. Please contact the church office (484-3473) if there is any way we can help you stay connected with Fairfield Glade UMC.
Volunteers Needed
Become a tutor!  If you can read, you can teach someone else to read.  Share the gift of
reading with someone else.  Adults  often  face challenges in reading, math, and English as
a second language.  You can help make a difference. Volunteers are specifically trained to
use the best known adult education reading programs in the world.  Sessions are about
one and one-half hours, twice a week.  They may be scheduled at a time and place of
mutual convenience for the student and tutor.  Cumberland Adult Reading Council is a
non-profit 501(c)3 agency and an affiliate of ProLiteracy America.  Contact Terri Bond,
Director (931)303-5809.

Bread of Life Needs Food Items
The Bread of Life is in desperate need of food items. A list of these items can be picked up
from the table outside the church office. Supplies have been exhausted due to an increase
in the number of people being fed at the Mission. Items can be dropped at the church or at
the Mission and monetary donations are always welcome.
Barnabas Ministry

We want to stay connected to you!  If you are unable to attend worship services because of illness or anything that keeps you from sharing in the life of our
church, we want you to know that you are missed, and that you are still a part of our congregation.  For that reason, we want to stay connected to you, and that
is the purpose of our Ministry.  When you can’t come to church, we can go to you.  There are Barnabas Ministers, volunteers from our congregation, who are
ready to serve you .
Once you let us know you want to be a recipient of this ministry, a Barnabas Minister is assigned to you.  This person offers to serve you Holy Communion once
a month, if you so desire, and will stay in contact with you by pre-arranged home visits, cards, and phone messages.  Barnabas ministers try to make some
kind of contact with you once a week, but all of these contacts will ultimately be at your discretion.  We want you to feel comfortable as a recipient of this
ministry, and you do not have to be a member of any church.  This is a great opportunity to make a new friend and to stay connected to people who care about
you.   Just call the church and let us know that you are interested in having a Barnabas Minister.
Rummage Sale Update
The annual UMW Church-wide Rummage Sale will take place this year on April 16 and 17, but the Fellowship
Hall and surrounding rooms will be “bursting” with activity as the actual set-up begins.  You will soon have the
opportunity to sign up to work the week of April 12.  It’s more fun than you can imagine as everyone pulls
together to make this sale a success.

Many of you are already bringing clothing for the sale (all washed, ironed, etc.) on Tuesdays to the collection bin
at the side door of the church.  We can use more help to pre-sort these donations every Tuesday from 10:00 a.
m. until noon. We’re just accepting clothing due to space restrictions, but we want it all so don’t get rid of anything
you might have for the sale.  We’re wanting really nice furniture, decorator items, housewares, and various items
for the silent auction.  Remember, all funds  go to local, national and international charities from UMW.  Linda
McClanahan (707-0976) and Sandy Fischer (484-2707), co-chairs, have some great new ideas for the sale; we
appreciate their inspiration and enthusiasm.

March 10, 2010:  9 A.M. - ANNUAL LENTEN BREAKFAST

This year’s Lenten Breakfast is  March 10 at 9:00 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall.  Every

meetings to attend the breakfast.  Connie Hall will be the main speaker for this event.  A
sign-up sheet is available at the church office window, or call Lynn Sewell at 456-4224 by
Tuesday, March 9. The Lenten Breakfast is a tradition at FFGUMC for over ten years.
There is no cost to the breakfast, but donation baskets will be on the tables.  Associate
Pastor Lanita Pride will distribute communion at the end of breakfast.

Emmaus of the Cumberlands Walk to Emmaus

A “Walk to Emmaus” IS a weekend intense program of Christian study and spiritual
growth.  It is NOT a retreat or a cure-all for persons who may be experiencing temporary
problems. For those of us who have taken this Walk, it is an experience of a lifetime,
strengthening our walk with Christ.

This year, a men's walk will be held
March 11, and a women's walk will be held beginning
March 25, taking place in Livingston, TN.  Men's walks take place twice a year (March and
September), and women's walks three times per year (March, July and September).

If you would like to find out more about this exciting experience that could be yours, please
call either Rich or Frankie Dendler at 459-2031.
UMW Social Action Committee
One of the areas that UMW members learn about and are concerned with
is in social action for the earth and her environment.  One UMW goal is to
try to become more “green” in our actions in our homes.  One way is to
read more green articles in publications about our environment on ways
to be help us to stay healthy.  Magazines can be passed to friends,
neighbors, nursing homes, and even to schools for kids’ projects.
Newspapers can be recycled at the County Recycling Center on Peavine
Road on your way to town.  Drop off plastics, aluminum cans (minus the
tab) and cardboard.  The tabs on cans can be donated to Big Boys BBQ
for the Shriner’s Hospital collection jar.  Try reducing your electric bill by
following VEC’s recommendations:  unplug the TV when you are not
watching it; use those funny-looking fluorescent bulbs in your light
fixtures; unplug other small appliances like the toaster, microwave and
computers when not in use.
We know this may be a hassle to start with, but any savings is worth the
time.  So, pay attention to the “green” messages everywhere they appear
— help the environment stay beautiful.
Military Personnel Grocery Assistance
Please cut and save grocery coupons that you won’t be using yourself to be
used by military personnel.  This does NOT include any box tops or Campbell
Soup labels; or individual grocer’s coupons (e.g. Kroger, Food City, etc.).
Coupons desired would be those issued by product manufacturers with an
expiration date.  These are collected in a box located atop the sound system in
the Fellowship Hall near the entrance.
For military personnel only, these coupons may be used six months beyond the
expiration date.  The collected coupons are mailed in periodically.
You can help make it happen for deserving Cumberland County residents by donating to the Fairfield Glade United Methodist Church Scholarship Fund.

In 2009, the FFGUMC funded 30 scholarships to Tennessee schools.  The recipients were chosen according to need and academic achievement from a pool
of 108 applicants.  Unlike many academic scholarships and the Tennessee Hope Scholarships, the FFGUMC scholarships are open to all deserving residents—
not just recent high school graduates.
Of the 30 recipients, ten were recent high school graduates, and 7 were non-traditional students. 13 successful, continuing students were funded again. We
distributed $8,000 to the high school group and $14,500 to the non-traditional and returning students group.  There were 4 males and 6 females in the high
school group and 5 males and 15 females in the post-high school group.  We funded 15 scholarships at the $1,000 level and the remaining 15 at the $500
level.
With the accelerated growth of college costs, the need for scholarship monies always exceeds the amount the committee has to distribute.  We deeply
appreciate the contributions of the church members and prayerfully request that you continue to support this worthwhile outreach program.  Donations are
taken any time of the year.

Help us do more in 2010.  When you are planning your donations for this year, consider giving money to the Scholarship Fund.
Red Bird in the Spring
Once again we will be heading to Red Bird Mission to help the folks in the

projects as well as on homes where the work will be more physically demanding.
The dates for the trip are
April 25 through 30.  A reservation needs to be made
at Red Bird so please contact  Paulette Richardson  (456-9328) if you are
