Towel and Basin 2010
Fairfield Glade United Methodist Church
Sacrificial service to others is symbolized by the towel and basin when, during the Last
Supper, Jesus washed the feet of the disciples.  In this selfless act of servanthood Jesus
exemplifies to those closest to him the act of responding to the needs of others without
regard to his position or status….

John 13:12-15
Do you know what I have done to you?  You call me Teacher and Lord – and you are right, for
that is what I am.  So if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to
wash one another’s feet.  For I have set you an example, that you also should do as I have
done to you.

We, as his disciples, are called to a life of service in Christ’s name to others.  It is how we live
out our faith.

This year, we present the Towel and Basin award to a person whose discipleship and
servant leadership inspire and encourage others…
Her example of calm courage and willingness to go where many others would rather not is an
example to many.  She draws strength from a deep and abiding faith that she truly lives out in
all she does… working not only for the greater good of this congregation, but also for the
county as well.

Two scriptures exemplify her work:
Matthew 25:40  And the king will answer them, “Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the
least of these who are members of my family,* you did it to me.”

In Genesis 1:28  God instructs humanity to honor and care for the fish of the sea and the birds
of the air and every living thing that moves upon the earth.
This year’s Towel and Basin recipient can be seen volunteering at Habitat for Humanity,
hauling crushed beer cans for the Humane Society, pruning shrubs and transplanting trees
around the church grounds.  She is often the calming oil upon troubled waters in times of
conflict and unrest within the various boards she serves throughout the community.  She
cares for and about the least and forgotten – whether it is someone in a nursing home who
has no family or a blind and abandoned dog.  She served for years as secretary for the
Trustees and is currently an active Stephen Minister.  She has organized worship services at
Fairfield Glade Assisted Living as well as additional activities for the residents there.  She
regularly visits folks at our nursing homes and brings joy to the staff and other residents as
well.  She has a heart as big as God’s great creation and cares deeply for both her fellow
human being as well as the animals God has given to us.  She rescues cats and dogs and
fosters ones that many would never see as viable, loving animals.  She has a way of seeing
us and animals for who we are through God’s eyes.

It is an honor to present this year’s Towel and Basin award to Sara Senft.

Every year, for the past five years, she has designed and made our Towel and Basin award
out of stained glass.  There has been a lot of praying that she wouldn’t ask when we would be
doing the presentation, because we couldn’t see having her make her own award… But
based on her pattern, a cross-stitched piece has been done.
